Black & Ethnic Minority Deaf People Conference

Shazia Afzal, Project Manager at the National Deaf Children's Society will be looking at how a group of diverse organisations in Bradford, have come together to provide advice, support and social activities exploring Deaf/Asian bi-culturalism. Co-presenting with Mr Barry Malik from the Asian Disability Alliance and Mr Mohammed Shabir from the Asian Disability Network.
Dr Jennifer Harris, Senior Research Fellow at the University of York presenting her research on 'Exploring the needs for health and social care services of Deaf refugees and asylum seekers'.
Gail Penberthy, Direct Service & Development Manager and Lorna McKenzie, Community Development Worker, BID Services for Deaf People. 'Accessibility of services for the Black & Ethnic Minority Deaf Community in Birmingham'.
Deepa Shastri from deafPLUS will be discussing service provision in London with examples from the Asian Deaf Project in Ealing and Tower Hamlets and covering such issues as health, advocacy, promoting self-confidence and learning new skills.
Rahana Hallim, Chair and Jackie Powell, Treasurer of the London Ethnic Minority Deaf Association, discussing the future for self-help groups.

Bob McDonald, Policy Advisor at the Department of Health, presenting "A Sign of the Times - Modernising Mental Health Services for People who are Deaf". A consultation document leading up to a strategy document in the autumn.
Brendan Monteiro, Consultant Psychiatrist at John Denmark Unit, National Centre for Mental Health & Deafness, Manchester. "Mental Health Services for Deaf Adults".
Open Forum. To discuss Service Users experiences and future developments.
Naomi Sharples, Project leader for Deaf Peoples Access to Nurse Education and tutor for the Deaf and hearing students at the University of Salford. "The role of Education in meeting the standards for mental health outlined in A Sign of the Times"
Pauline Latchem, Outreach & Development Worker, Deaf People & Mental Health at Brent Deaf People's Limited. BDPL run a Mental health Drop-In in partnership with Brent MIND, working together to improve access for local deaf people - a model for service development in other areas.
Peter Hindley, consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist at National Deaf Services. "The mental health of deaf children and adolescents: assessment and management"

Helplines Seminar

Penny Sturgess, Helpline & Information Service Manager at the British Deaf Association. The BDA Helpline provides a range of information and advice for Deaf people. Subjects include the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), welfare benefits, education and the latest on BSL and the Deaf community.
Priya Shah, Helplines Development Officer at the Telephone Helplines Association. 'Making your helpline accessible' - focusing on good practice issues for helplines.
Heather Robinson, Service Support Manager at the Samaritans. Currently being piloted and due to be rolled out comprehensively across the UK later this year, the Samaritans email facility is just one example of how they make their service accessible to deaf people.
Colin Anderson and Liz Cook of Sense. "Reaching deafblind people". Isolation is one of the biggest problems dual sensory impaired people face. Sense are the largest charity in the UK providing services to deafblind people.
Paul Gibson, Service Manager and Chris Shaw, Senior Co-ordinator at Broadcasting Support Services. Beyond the Helpline: How to use Internet and email response services to serve a diverse audience. An overview of online/email response services and how this new method of communication can help charities make their services more accessible to deaf or hard of hearing people. From appeals to advice giving, this session will give you guidelines on how to set up and manage Internet and online response services.
