DEAF AWARENESS WEEK in SCOTLAND

Darroch Hearing Centres offer free, no-obligation hearing assessments to anyone who wants to have their hearing checked during Deaf Awareness Week – Monday 4 th to Sunday 10 th May 2009.

By booking an appointment, you can have your ears examined, your hearing tested and can talk to a hearing aid audiologist about any concerns you have about your hearing. Existing hearing aid users can have their hearing aids cleaned and checked free of charge.

In addition, new and existing clients can find out all about Starkey hearing instruments, from a Starkey audiologist who will be in attendance during the week-long event. In particular, visitors to their local centre will have their first opportunity to find out about Starkey’s latest S Series hearing system – new hearing aids that promise higher fidelity and smart behaviour in different audio situations. Featuring parallel multi-threading processors, the system can calculate specialized algorithms to a greater degree of precision, leading to better sound quality.

“Hearing loss is a very personal thing and I treat it as seriously as you do. To support Deaf Awareness Week I will offer a free hearing assessment,” says Paul Darroch, hearing aid audiologist and owner of Darroch Hearing Centres. “This is a thorough, professional examination, and takes around 30 to 40 minutes. Of course, there is no obligation or commitment to purchase a hearing aid.”

However, everyone deciding to try hearing instruments has a free 4-week evaluation period before payment, ensuring their satisfaction with the system. Additionally, anyone who purchases any Starkey hearing instrument will receive 20% off the normal list price during Deaf Awareness Week.

Darroch Hearing Centres welcome referrals from ENT Consultants, General Practitioners and other healthcare workers, as well as charities, employers and special needs groups. “I would particularly encourage anyone employing staff who work in noise to contact me, to get advice on how to comply with the current HSE regulations,” states Paul.

By focusing on the person, not just the hearing impairment, we can help patients achieve a better quality of life by helping them to hear clearly again.

DEAF ALERTER PLC FREE EVENT DEAF AWARNESS WEEK

All organisations and employers should be looking at ways of ensuring they are equal access providers, and if they are not they should be seriously looking at removing barriers to improve access for Deaf and hard of hearing people.

One of the most concerning barriers Deaf people face on a daily basis, is not having access to fire alarm warnings in public access buildings and places of work.  Something most hearing people take for granted; but for Deaf people a fire alarm evacuation can be frightening and impose great danger!

Deaf Alerter plc, the UK’s leading provider of fire alarm warning and messaging systems for Deaf and hard of hearing people, is offering organisations and employers the opportunity to attend a free seminar, accredited by The Construction Service’s, Continuing Professional Development program.  The seminar is entitled:Fire evacuation communication for disabled people: The law and the solutions,’ and is aimed at raising awareness about the lack of fire safety provision for Deaf people and disabled people. It identifies what the law requires by looking at Acts such as the Disability Discrimination Act and the Fire Act.

The seminar is an excellent way to gain an understanding of the barriers faced by Deaf students, employees and visitors and provides solutions to achieve safe access and egress  for Deaf people in an emergency or fire situation.

If you would like to attend the seminar for free during Deaf Awareness Week 2009, at one of the below venues, please book on-line at www.cpduk.co.uk Roadseminars 2009
