DEAF AWARENESS WEEK in SCOTLAND

Darroch Hearing Centres offer free, no-obligation hearing assessments to anyone who wants to have their hearing checked during Deaf Awareness Week – Monday 4 th to Sunday 10 th May 2009.

By booking an appointment, you can have your ears examined, your hearing tested and can talk to a hearing aid audiologist about any concerns you have about your hearing. Existing hearing aid users can have their hearing aids cleaned and checked free of charge.

In addition, new and existing clients can find out all about Starkey hearing instruments, from a Starkey audiologist who will be in attendance during the week-long event. In particular, visitors to their local centre will have their first opportunity to find out about Starkey’s latest S Series hearing system – new hearing aids that promise higher fidelity and smart behaviour in different audio situations. Featuring parallel multi-threading processors, the system can calculate specialized algorithms to a greater degree of precision, leading to better sound quality.

“Hearing loss is a very personal thing and I treat it as seriously as you do. To support Deaf Awareness Week I will offer a free hearing assessment,” says Paul Darroch, hearing aid audiologist and owner of Darroch Hearing Centres. “This is a thorough, professional examination, and takes around 30 to 40 minutes. Of course, there is no obligation or commitment to purchase a hearing aid.”

However, everyone deciding to try hearing instruments has a free 4-week evaluation period before payment, ensuring their satisfaction with the system. Additionally, anyone who purchases any Starkey hearing instrument will receive 20% off the normal list price during Deaf Awareness Week.

Darroch Hearing Centres welcome referrals from ENT Consultants, General Practitioners and other healthcare workers, as well as charities, employers and special needs groups. “I would particularly encourage anyone employing staff who work in noise to contact me, to get advice on how to comply with the current HSE regulations,” states Paul.

By focusing on the person, not just the hearing impairment, we can help patients achieve a better quality of life by helping them to hear clearly again.

Phone 0141 620 3865 or e-mail advice@darroch-hearing.co.uk to book your appointment . For more information visit: www.darroch-hearing.co.uk

Open to entries every day during the Open Week:

 Hear Suffolk Photography Competition

A major new photographic competition is being launched this month by The Hearing Care Centre.  Called ‘Hear Suffolk’ the event is being staged to coincide with the UK launch of an international campaign to raise awareness of the effects of hearing loss.

The Hearing Care Centre is inviting amateur photographers from across Suffolk to enter the competition with pictures, which demonstrate the sounds of Suffolk that may not be heard by those with hearing loss.

“It could be a landscape with field of barley blowing in the wind; the seashore at Southwold, or a photograph of the bells at Bury Cathedral,” says Karen Finch, Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre.   “In fact any picture which depicts the sounds of the county in a powerful way,” she says.

“People with good hearing often don’t realise the impact even mild hearing loss has on the enjoyment of ordinary things around us – we want our competition and the campaign to draw attention to some of the sounds that hard-of-hearing people cannot hear.”

Karen explained:  “It can take years for some people to decide to do something about their hearing loss - it’s estimated that there are around 70,000 people in Suffolk who haven’t yet done anything about it – and we want to get the message across that they really are missing out on life and CAN do something about it.”

The Company is involving photographic societies from across Suffolk in the competition, but anyone can take part.  There’s a prize of £250 for the best picture and in a special class for entrants who are under 14 there’ll be a prize of £150.  The runners up will also get cash prizes and the best pictures will go on display in an exhibition which it is hoped will travel the county.

The judges will include, Barry Freeman ARPS DPAGB, who is chairman of the Ipswich & District Photographic Society and Andy Abbott, Photographic Editor at the East Anglian Daily Times.

Karen Finch says: “Because of this photographic connection with Hear the World, the national initiative by Phonak and because Suffolk is such a beautiful county, we thought it was appropriate to have our own competition.  If through this we raise awareness about hearing loss, and even one person does something about that hearing loss as a result, then we will be more than happy.”

ENTRY DETAILS:

To enter the competition send your picture as an A4 print (in colour or black & white) to Photographic Competition, The Hearing Care Centre, 5 High Street, Ipswich, IP1 3JZ.  Make sure write your name, address, contact number and age (junior category only) on a label on the back of the print.  If you want your picture returned, please enclose a suitable stamped and self-addressed envelope. DEADLINE - SUNDAY 31ST MAY 2009.
