The CICS Group was founded by parents whose children have cochlear implants to help others who are in the same situation, or who are thinking about an implant for their child. The fundamental aim is to help each other by sharing first hand experience of life with an implanted child. We have members at all of the major U.K. Implant Centres and children using every type of cochlear implant device currently available, with various modes of communication.

Professionals can give you medical and practical information and advice about cochlear implants, but they do not live with the children twenty-four hours of each day, and cannot provide the emotional support that other parents can. In the area of living with, and bringing up children who have cochlear implants, the parents are the professionals.

WE AIM TO:

• Provide support at any time before, during or after a child's cochlear implant.
• Provide first-hand experience of the impact of a cochlear implant on family life.
• Link parents geographically, or by special situations such as medical conditions, regardless of the location of their Implant Centre.
• Offer practical help with everyday problems which may seem too minor to take up with an Implant Centre, such as how processors can be most comfortably worn by young children.
• Suggest ideas about day-to-day rehabilitation within the family setting.
• Organise social events for implantees, prospective implantees, their siblings, families and friends.
• Organise Information Days covering a range of topics relevant for the families of implanted children or for those undergoing assessment.
• Circulate a regular newsletter.
• Provide links with other groups, including adult implantees both in the U.K. and overseas.
