Our website has recently been expanded to give each member organisation their own page in the Members Directory, to include their logo, any regional offices and greater details of their activities. The website has also been redesigned so that it is accessible on mobile phones as a WAP site. If you are able to access WAP sites on your mobile phone you can view the whole of our website using the same URL: www.deafcouncil.org.uk

Deafness & the Ageing Process Conference - 2nd October

Reaching Deaf Minds

Reaching Deaf Minds is a promotional campaign by Sign …The National Society for Mental Health and Deafness to reduce the risk of deaf people developing mental health problems by improving access to primary care services. Doctors that are able to sign

A consortium of deaf organisations are wanting to set up a GP Practice that can deliver health services in sign language. If you know of any Health Professionals that are proficient in BSL please let us know.

Deaf Perspectives: Challenging Dominant Christian Thought

Christian Deaf Link UK are running a day conference in partnership with London Bible College on 29th November 2003. The title is 'Deaf Perspectives: Challenging Dominant Christian Thought', and the day will include 5 presentations (3 given in BSL and 2 in English) reflecting on different theological aspects of Deaf Christianity. Emerging from the Chrysalis

The 'Emerging from the Chrysalis' research project report has recently been published. It is a study into D/deafness and exclusion, focussing specifically on the employment and further education experiences of Cheshire and Warrington's D/deaf and hard of hearing community. The project was undertaken by Jennifer Dodds with Graham H Turner at University of Central Lancashire on behalf of Deafness Support Network. Copies can be obtained from DSN by email on dsn@deafnesssupportnetwork.co.uk and cost £5 including post and packaging.

Digital Television Consumer Expert Group

Ruth Myers is a member of the government's Digital Television Consumer Expert Group which is advising the government on how the switchover from analogue to digital should be handled. Views, feedback of all kinds, and actual experiences with digital TV would be warmly welcomed by email to: rmyers@waitrose.com or fax on 01923 283127. Deafax Elects Distinguished Honorary President

Deafax have elected their first Honorary President. Dr Vinton Cerf is the Architect/Inventor of the Internet and is a powerful influence both in the USA and throughout the world in helping to break down communication barriers. Dr Cerf also sits on the Board of Trustees at Gallaudet University, is hard of hearing and his wife is profoundly deaf. For further details go to www.deafax.org

Access to the NHS Survey

We are working with RNID to co-ordinate a national survey of deaf people's experiences visiting their GP, in hospital and at A&E wards. The survey will be carried out in the autumn and the report produced will assist in progressing the Access to Health Campaign at a national level as well as locally by regional deaf organisations. If your organisation would like to participate in the survey please contact us.
