Defeating Deafness, the UK's medical research charity for deaf and hard of hearing people, has unveiled a brand new name and a new look, becoming Deafness Research UK. Vivienne Michael, Chief Executive, said: "Our new name reflects our national status and the unique role we play in pioneering high quality research focussed on bringing practical benefits to millions of deaf and hard of hearing people."
The launch of the new identity is timed to mark the release of a study aimed at raising awareness of the poor treatment of those that experience tinnitus in the UK. The study reveals that the vast majority of patients with tinnitus are being badly let down by the NHS. For further details go to www.deafnessresearch.org.uk
Return to SENDA Conference - 3 November 2005
Following on from the successful conference held last year, CACDP are planning another conference, Access to Examinations and Assessments for Deaf Students - What is Reasonable Adjustment in Schools and Further Education?, to be held at the British Library which will provide an opportunity for awarding bodies and education institutions to develop their understanding of the assessment issues which arise from the particular needs of deaf students. For further details and a booking form go to www.cacdp.org.uk or phone 0191 383 7911 or email leannec@cacdp.org.uk .
RNID, RNIB and the British Red Cross have launched an online store to help deliver major improvements in the provision of equipment. The website acts as a hub for equipment managers and health professionals, allowing them to buy and sell surplus items of adult and children's equipment, thereby improving access to high quality community equipment. The recycling of goods will reduce costs, free up resources and limit waiting times for much-needed items of equipment. Community equipment providers across the country are being encouraged to make use of the web-based service - which is free to use.
Towards Equity and Access Implementation Panel
The Department of Health's panel overseeing the implementation of recommendations to improve deaf people's access to health services held their second meeting on 8 September to review progress. UK Council on Deafness is on the Panel to ensure that all deaf organisations are able to be kept informed of their work and to contribute whenever possible. The Department of Health may have some funding available to commission national initiatives that support the implementation of the recommendations in the report. No amount of funding is guaranteed to be available but there is about £1m of the money attached to the report that has not yet been distributed. Proposals must be submitted by 14 October, for further details contact Roger Hewitt on r.hewitt@deafcouncil.org.uk . Details about the work of the panel are available on the British Society for Mental Health and Deafness website at www.bsmhd.org.uk/teaimp.htm
