2007 Annual Deafness Conference CALL FOR PAPERS

On Tuesday 6 November 2007 at Britannia Street Conference Centre, Kings Cross, London, the conference is an opportunity for all professionals working with deaf people to meet and network and to gain an understanding of developments taking place across the country and across the spectrum of deafness. Delegates at previous conferences commented: “A great networking opportunity and a chance to learn about new projects” “Opportunity to meet and chat with other people from the sector. Chance to publicise our own work”, “Great to hear about all that UKCoD and their members are doing.”

The conference will showcase innovative projects, give examples of collaborative initiatives and feature the latest research resulting in a better understanding of the diverse activities of the organisations working with deaf people across the UK. Those wishing to present at the conference please email an outline of the presentation to j.isaac@deafcouncil.org.uk by 31st August 2007. There is also an opportunity to exhibit at the conference. All-Party Parliamentary Group on Deafness

At the APPGD AGM on 18 April the following officers were elected for 2007/8: Chair: Malcolm Bruce
Vice-Chairs: Rosie Cooper, Tom Levitt, Tim Loughton, Baroness Wilkins.

The next meeting of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Deafness will be an opportunity to hear from Ivan Lewis, Parliamentary under Secretary of State for Care Services on Improving Access to Audiology Services in England, the Department of Health’s action plan to reduce hearing aid waiting times. The meeting is being held from 4.00pm to 5.00pm on Tuesday 22 May 2007.

"Look At Me" 7th-13th May 2007 Deaf Awareness Week

7th – 13th May 2007 is Deaf Awareness Week and organisations working with deaf people across the country are inviting everyone to 'Look At Me'. The theme aims to improve understanding of the different types of deafness by highlighting the many different methods of communication used by deaf, deafened, deafblind and hard of hearing people, such as sign language and lipreading. Supported by over one hundred organisations, Deaf Awareness Week involves a UK wide series of national and local events. "The UK Council on Deafness are delighted to be coordinating the joint all-inclusive Deaf Awareness Week campaign, promoting social inclusion and raising awareness of the work of all the national and local organisations that support deaf people and their family and friends."

HI KENT is running free events all week at Ashford Gateway, Park Mall featuring Sign Language Taster Sessions for Adults and Demonstrations of assistive equipment for deaf people. Hi Kent Chief Executive John Clayton said: "The taster sessions will bean informal, fun introduction to Sign Language, Lipreading and deaf awareness, and people who want to take their interest further will be able to sign up for our local Sign Language and Lipreading classes.

Tayside Deaf Association Sound Sense Project. Deaf Awareness Roadshow Tues 8th May 11am - 2pm at Somerfield Store, Blairgowrie. Come along and see what services are available for people with all types of deafness in your local area.

RNID. Bournville coffee and information morning. Wednesday 9 May 2007. Come and join us at the coffee and information morning. We'll be discussing Patient Advice and Liaison services and accessing health service. Plus you can: chat to fellow RNID members, try out equipment, An induction loop, BSL interpreters and a lipspeaker will be provided. Tea, coffee and biscuits will also be available!

STAGETEXT captioned performances in Deaf Awareness Week 2007. Friday 11 May at 8pm. Captioned performance of The Patriot at the Tron Theatre, Glasgow. An explosive new political drama from award-winning playwright Grae Cleugh (2002 Olivier Most Promising Playwright). Tom Gordon is a proud man, a seasoned MSP, who has dedicated his life to serving his constituents and his country. The arrival of Paul, an impassioned idealist, into his family’s home brings the realities of foreign and domestic affairs crashing into his own living room.

CACDP Scotland Fair 2007 – ‘Communication for All’. Saturday 12 May 2007, Hampden Park, Glasgow. Come along on the day and:
• learn about CACDP qualifications;
• try out workshop taster sessions (e.g. in BSL and communication tactics with deaf people);
• view our range of support materials for students, tutors and assessors;
• speak to CACDP staff and learn more about the role of CACDP;
• meet other deaf and hearing people interested in the field;
• speak to other relevant organisations exhibiting on the day;
…and raise awareness of deaf issues.

Sandwell Deaf Community Association Deaf Awalk Tuesday 8 May 1pm onwards. Anybody (both Deaf and Hearing) can join the SDCA staff on the Deaf Awareness Walk. We will be walking from the Deaf Centre at Dagger Lane, go past MacDonalds, the General Hospital, Cronehills and finish at the High Street in West Bromwich Town. Once there, we will pass out SDCA stuff to passers-by/shoppers. There will also be community members at the centre to give out information and help visitors to find out more about the SDCA and a range of services we provide.
