Supporting deaf students in Further and Higher Education Conference - 8th June
An opportunity to learn how to prepare deaf pupils for life at college and university and how best to support deaf students in FE and HE from examples of good practice. The conference will include Disseminating the findings from the Full Potential project, an innovative Learning and Skills Council funded course run by the Royal Association for Deaf people. Full Potential targets the improvement of soft skills such as 'confidence', 'communication' and 'working with others' to prepare young deaf people for successful entry into employment and further & higher education, Tessa Padden and Bencie Woll from City University will present the findings of Deaf Students' Learning in Mainstream Vocational Training Settings, a study, funded by the European Leonardo Programme, exploring Deaf students' views of the teaching and interpreting provided in mainstream settings and how Deaf students learn in a number of European countries. Children First Conference - 22nd June
At the Britannia Hotel, New Street, Birmingham. Putting the 'Children First: Positive Practice Standards for Deaf Children in Social Services' policy into practice, across Education, Health and Social Services. Covering 'joined-up working', parents as professional partners and assessing what constitutes a quality service. This policy recognises the need for raised awareness of deaf children's needs with appropriate adjustment of departmental policies and practices together with the recognition of deaf children's cultural and linguistic needs across the service. Developing partnerships between Social Services, Health Authorities and Education at local and national level will help maximise opportunities and accessibility for deaf children and their families and contribute to a culture in which deaf children are enabled to thrive and develop into healthy, well-adjusted young people and adults. BAA has now been formed from the merged British Association of Audiological Scientists (BAAS), the British Association of Audiologists (BAAT) and the British Society of Hearing Therapists (BSHT) to become the largest UK Audiology organisation representing the views of Audiologists. Deaf Parenting Conference - 26th May
A free day of presentations, workshops and exhibition, to raise awareness among professionals about the gaps in services for Deaf parents, provide examples of good practice and provide Deaf Parents with parenting information. Organised by Deaf Parenting Project and RNID in conjunction with LEMDA and RAD, at Abbey Community Centre, Westminster. Creche facilities will be available. Social Inclusion and Deaf People Conference - 4th June
At University of Greenwich, London. The conference will address social inclusion and Deaf people who use British Sign Language. With the help of speakers, we will learn about the issues and solution, with the examples of best practice. This conference will be an excellent opportunity for you to find out more and share good practices. The conference aims to provide you with practical measures to improve access to your services for local deaf people who use British Sign Language as their first language in light of the full implementation of the Disability Discrimination Act in October this year. The Deaf Ex-Mainstreamers Group (DEX) has published a groundbreaking Best Value Review "Deaf Toolkit: Best Value Review of Deaf Children in Education, from User's Perspective". The review brings a new dimension to deaf education by evaluating good practice and highlighting regional areas across the UK that are working towards meeting the needs of deaf children. DWP announces extra £1/2m for BSL Initiatives
British Sign Language, recognised last year as a language in its own right, today received a further boost as Maria Eagle announced the ten organisations to which the Government intends to award £1.5million funding. The Department for Work and Pensions intends to award contracts, subject to final negotiations, to: British Deaf Association; Centre for Deaf People Leicester; Centre for Deaf Studies - University of Bristol; Christian Deaf Link; Consortium of Assessment and Training Providers; DeafPLUS; Leeds University; National Deaf Children's Society; Remark!; BSL Awareness Consortium, including: Birmingham Institute for the Deaf; Cambridgeshire Deaf Association; Cumbria Deaf Association; Deaf Direct; Hampshire Deaf Association; Leicestershire Centre for Deaf People; Norfolk Deaf Association; North Wales Deaf Association; Nottinghamshire Deaf Society; Royal Association for Deaf people; Sense (The National Deafblind and Rubella Association); Sign .. The British Society for Mental Health & Deafness Annual Conference, Mental Health Services for Deaf People - Achieving Equity and Access will be held on Thursday 27th May 2004 at the Angel Hotel, Cardiff. The Keynote Address will be given by Jane Hutt, the Welsh Assembly Minister for Health and Social Services. The programme includes presentations from Margaret du Feu, Consultant in Psychiatry, Queen Elizabeth Psychiatric Hospital, Birmingham and Phil Chick, Director of Mental Health at the Welsh Assembly.
