Deaf Awareness Week

3rd - 9th May 2004

Continuing with the successful LOOK AT ME theme from last year the Deaf Awareness Week campaign will raise awareness of the many different methods of communication used by deaf people. Organisations will be holding events around the country and there will be a co-ordinated national media campaign. Posters and Leaflets will be available from Sylvie Say s.say@deafcouncil.org.uk

The website www.look-at-me.org.uk will feature a Diary of Events, Examples of Good Practice, Quick Facts and ideas for making your event successful. So start planning your Deaf Awareness Week Event now and, to have it featured on the website, send the details to r.deluca@deafcouncil.org.uk

Access to Communication in English Conference

30th March 2004 at Britannia Street Conference Centre, London

Launching the Access to Communication in English Campaign, which aims to increase the provision of Language and Communication Access Services for deaf people whose preferred language is English.
A recent survey reveals the dire shortage of provision and lack of awareness of the services that are available. Chris Underwood, Head of Campaigns at RNID will present the findings of the survey.

What are LACAPs? Miranda Pickersgill, Chief Executive of CACDP, will give an introduction to the new model, approach and terminology 'Language Service Professional'.

The Registration System. Roz Chalmers and Jane Andrews, CACDP Standards Officers will give an overview of the standards required for registration, the Codes of Practice and Complaints Procedure.

The Users' Views. Presenting deaf peoples' experiences of using LACAPs will be Janet Brown who uses Deafblind Communicators; Ross Trotter who uses both Lipspeakers and Speech to Text Reporters; Jill Hipson whose preferred communication is Signed English; and Paul Cable, a user of Cued Speech.

Sign Language and English. Professor Bencie Woll, Chair of Sign Language & Deaf Studies at City University, using a linguistic perspective, will discuss how deaf and deafened people mix English with BSL to develop a means of communication.

Making the Choice. Dr Loraine Gailey, Chief Executive of the LINK Centre for Deafened People will talk about their work with deafened people and what the influences are that lead a deafened person to adopt communication tactics that suit their lifestyle.

Standards for Better Health

The Department of Health is consulting to decide what should be the 24 new core standards for health care. These core standards will become the foundation for health service quality. These standards will cover all services provided and commissioned by the NHS. The consultation process will be over three months, including public workshops, these workshops will end on 4 May 2004. You can respond with your view directly to standards.consultation@doh.gsi.gov.uk

Practice and Research Conference

Striving for Quality and Understanding Change: Social Services with Deaf And Hard of Hearing People is a conference being held by RNID in Manchester on 15th June and will present the practice developments and research findings from the Department of Health funded project "The Edge of Change".
