2004 Annual Deafness Conference

CALL FOR PAPERS

The conference will feature the latest research, showcase innovative projects, the findings of recent surveys and give examples of collaborative initiatives from across the full spectrum of deafness, resulting in a better understanding of the diverse activities of the many organisations working with deaf people across the UK. The theme of the Conference is 'collaborative working' and will feature the best examples of organisations working in partnership, either informally or as a consortium.

Organisations and individuals wishing to present at the conference must send by email a brief outline of their presentation to j.isaac@deafcouncil.org.uk by 31st July 2004.

Child Protection Conference

Advocacy Services can support people in a wide range of settings, including accessing Health, Social Services, Housing, Employment, Education and the Law. The main theme of the conference will be the use of Advocacy to support families at times of crisis, for example in Child Protection and family conflict. UK Council on Deafness Strategic Review

UK Council on Deafness is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year as the national infrastructure body for organisations working with deaf people. The trustees wish to develop a long-term vision to guide them through the next ten years, during which they will draw up detailed short-term Strategic Plans. Trustees aim to create an environment which will enable the UK Council on Deafness to provide the best possible service for all organisations working with deaf people. We wish to hear the views of as many of our members and other stakeholders as possible. The Consultation Document and Questionnaire are available on our website on the About Us page.

Completed questionnaires can be returned by post, fax or email. Please send your responses, by 15th August 2004, to strategy@deafcouncil.org.uk

All-Party Parliamentary Group on Deafness

The Inaugural meeting of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Deafness was held on 15th June 2004. At the meeting Lord Ashley of Stoke was appointed Honorary President of the group and the Officers were elected:

Chair: Malcolm Bruce MP (LibDem)
Vice Chair: Tom Levitt MP (Lab)
Vice Chair: Tim Loughton MP (Con)
Vice Chair: Martin Smyth MP (UUP)
Vice Chair: James Gray MP (Con)
Vice Chair: Baroness Wilkins (Lab)
Secretary: Simon Thomas MP (PC)

The meeting was attended by 15 members of the group, which has over 160 members from both Houses of Parliament, making it one of the largest of the All-Party Groups at Westminster. The group have agreed their objectives and will be meeting approximately 6 times a year. Topics to be covered at the autumn meetings will include a presentation from Ofcom and an update on the promotion of BSL. www.deaflawyers.org.uk

A new website has been set up by a group of Deaf solicitors, barristers, law students and people trying to qualify as lawyers. It aims to respond to access issues, publicise specialised information and raise awareness of issues Deaf people face within the legal system. The site also aims to bring Deaf lawyers together, and to reach out to others who may not be aware of their rights.
