Trustee Induction & Networking Day - 15 February 2005

To be held at Britannia Street Conference Centre, London. For all Chairs, Trustees and Chief Executives of organisations working with deaf people, an opportunity for new trustees to learn about their responsibilities and for experienced trustees to bring their knowledge up to date. Volunteering Conference - 25 January 2005

To be held at Britannia Street Conference Centre, London. In 2005 'The UK Year of the Volunteer' this is an opportunity for professionals working with volunteers to meet each other and learn about innovative ideas for recruitment, retention, training and management. There will be examples of best practice from organisations working with deaf and hard of hearing people, as well as information about funding, legal issues and the latest research. Health Promotion for Deaf Communities Conference - 10 March 2005

To be held at Britannia Street Conference Centre, London WC1. For health professionals, PCTs, Social Services, project managers and professionals working with deaf and hard of hearing people. A unique opportunity to find out about different methods of delivering health promotion to deaf people. There will be examples of best practice as well as information about current projects around the country. All-Party Parliamentary Group on Deafness

A delegation from the APPG on Deafness visited Oak Lodge School in Wandsworth on 14 December and the next meeting will be addressed by Stephen Carter, CEO of Ofcom, on 12 January. Reports of both events will be posted on the Group's website shortly www.appg-deafness.org.uk

Opportunities for Volunteering Grants

We have funding available for a number of new three-year projects to start in April 2005. The deadline for requesting a 1st Step application form is 21 January 2005 and the deadline for returning the completed 1st Step application forms is 11 February 2005. ACE Report

The ACE Campaign committee have produced a national report into deaf people's experiences of gaining access to public services. The report focuses on all those who use English language service professionals. Strategic Review

Following the extensive strategic review consultation process, carried out during 2004, the Trustees, at their meeting on 9 December 2004, have agreed a new Mission Statement to guide our work in the coming years. Focusing on our remit as the infrastructure organisation for voluntary sector organisations working with deaf people, our objectives will enable us to meet our aim of supporting members in their work with deaf people and encouraging co-operation between members in promoting and representing the diverse interests of deaf people. Videophone interpreting consultation

Feedback is being requested from BSL users on a customer charter that is being developed for video interpreting services. Video interpreting services are also known as Video Remote Interpreting (VRI), it is where a deaf person and hearing person are sitting beside each other in the same place and the interpreter is in another place interpreting for them through a videophone. Proposed Minimum Standards for Agencies - second consultation

The Agency Steering Group (ASG) recently conducted the first of three rounds of consultation concerning the proposed minimum standards for agencies. The ASG now wishes to enter into the second of these consultations with all stakeholders involved in the industry regarding the potential adoption of these minimum standards. TAG

TAG, the consortium of deaf organisations that for almost 20 years has been promoting the interests of deaf people in telecommunications has extended its remit to include broadcasting and all forms of electronic communication. In the broadcasting field, TAG is already involved in consultations, including quality standards for subtitling and setting quotas for subtitled and signed programmes. As a result of its extended remit, TAG will no longer use its former full name
(Telecommunications Action Group) and instead will simply be known as "TAG". Further information can be obtained from Ruth Myers - r.myers@merula.co.uk
