Access to the NHS Seminar 4th March 2004
The Launch of A Simple Cure - A UK report into deaf and hard of hearing people's experiences of the National Health Service. RNID and deaf organisations across the country have worked in collaboration to conduct a survey of deaf and hard of hearing people's experiences when visiting their GP surgeries and hospitals. The resulting Report reveals that the service received falls well short of what is reasonable, including shocking statistics about the risk deaf and hard of hearing people face when accessing healthcare. Plus Bob McDonald, Policy Advisor at the Department of Health will present the findings from the recent government consultation document "A Sign of the Times - Modernising Mental Health Services for People who are Deaf" and announce the initiatives that will follow from the report. An update on Sign's Reaching Deaf Minds Campaign from Matthew James. And Frances Chinemana will report on the latest initiatives at NHS Direct aimed at making their services accessible to deaf people and Sign Language Users. To book your place contact Sylvie Say s.say@deafcouncil.org.uk
The Criminal Records Bureau has announced another increase in fees to take effect from 1st April 2004. The fees will rise to £28.00 for a Standard Disclosure and £33 for an Enhanced Disclosure. Volunteers continue to be free of charge. The Home Office is also considering a number of changes to the way that applications for Disclosure are made. Some of the proposed changes may mean that we will no longer be able to administer applications for members free of charge because of the extra costs of being a Registered Body. Details of how to comment on the proposed changes can be found at www.crb.gov.uk/news/news.asp

Thanksgiving service at Westminster Chapel
It is a year since Ian Stillman was freed from prison in India. Ian and his family remain deeply thankful for the support from so many people, and now having readjusted to family life in England, Ian wants to meet his faithful supporters. The family hope that many will be able to join them on 28th February 2004, to celebrate Ian's freedom together, to meet fellow campaigners: old and young, deaf and hearing, from north and south. There will be refreshments before and after the service (which will be from 2.30pm - 3.30pm) and a chance to learn more about the deaf community in UK and India. For more details and to confirm your attendance (entrance free, but knowing number of people will help with catering), please contact Jo Pestell at CDL UK, The Olive Tree Centre, 69 High St, Rayleigh, Essex, SS6 7EJ Voice/fax: 01268 743261.
