Deaf Awareness Week 7th - 13th May 2007

The 2007 Deaf Awareness Week campaign got off to a great start on 20 March when 24 MPs and Peers attended a Deaf Awareness training day at Westminster. Organised by UK Council on Deafness, on behalf of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Deafness, the training, provided by RNID, covered communication tactics, sign language, basic information and statistics. All those attending learnt how to book communication support and to fingerspell their name.

The official launch of the campaign is taking place at an evening reception on 18 April at Portcullis House, Westminster. The event is expected to be attended by over 120 guests including MPs, representatives from UK Council on Deafness members and affiliate organisations and others.

Deaf Awareness Week is a unique awareness campaign bringing together about 250 deaf charities and organisations. Lots of events are being organised by UK Council on Deafness member and affiliate organisations around the country during the week.

SANE Email support service

SANE is pleased to announce the launch of a new email support service. SANEmail aims to provide support and information to people affected by mental health issues and will run alongside SANEline, the national out of hours mental health helpline. The service is available for anyone at sanemail@sane.org.uk, but SANEmail is particularly aimed at young people affected by mental illness, who may feel more at ease using email than the telephone. The new service provides another avenue by which people affected by mental illness can receive emotional support, as well as information on such matters as local and national mental health services, or treatments and therapies for dealing with panic attacks or overcoming depression.

If you require any SANEmail posters for your organisation or would like a pack of our wallet cards, please contact Rochelle Batten, SANEmail Co-ordinator, SANE, 1st Floor, Cityside House, 40 Adler Street, London E1 1EE. www.sane.org.uk Tel: 020 7422 5536 rbatten@saneline.org.

SANE's new email support and information service, SANEmail, can be contacted at sanemail@sane.org.uk. All messages will be responded to within 5 working days. For more immediate help SANEline is available from 1pm to 11pm every day of the year on 0845 767 8000.
