Deaf chief executive appointed to Disability Rights Commission

Susan Daniels, chief executive of The National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS), was appointed to the Disability Rights Commission on 28th March by the Secretary of State, Andrew Smith MP.

Ms Daniels, who is profoundly deaf herself, will work to achieve the DRC vision of eliminating discrimination against disabled people and promoting equality of opportunity. As well as ensuring the legal rights of disabled people are upheld under the Disability Discrimination Act (1995), she wants to change attitudes towards disability among non-disabled people. She is one of five new commissioners being appointed and will serve for three years.

Deaf since the age of four, Ms Daniels is particularly keen that deaf children and young people and their families are represented. She will work with other deaf organisations to represent the needs of the entire d/Deaf community.

Recognition of British Sign Language

Latest developments: Following the statement on 18th March from Andrew Smith, Secretary of State at the Department of Work and Pensions that 'The Government recognises that British Sign Language (BSL) is a language in its own right regularly used by a significant number of people' there have been further developments in Europe on 1st April when the Report from Malcolm Bruce MP recommending the protection and promotion of European sign languages was debated and adopted by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. The Report will now go to the Committee of Ministers, which represents 44 countries in Europe. Ministers will be asked to draft an instrument giving legal recognition to sign languages.
