All Party Group on Deafness

Visit to Charing Cross Audiology Service, 1 February 2006

Attendees:

Malcolm Bruce MP (Chair of Group)

Tim Loughton MP

Eddie O’Hara MP

Peter Bottomley MP

Baroness Wilkins

Notes:

Julie Wilkins, Head of Audiology at Charing Cross, and Ruth Thomsen, Senior Audiologist, gave a presentation to the Group, giving their experiences of modernisation. Charing Cross was part of the “Second Wave” of modernisation and joined the MHAS Programme in Spring 2003. Since being modernised, the audiologists felt that they could offer a much better service which really met the needs of patients. Waiting times had increased but this had been well managed, partly through extra staffing and partly with out-of-hours clinics.

One of the Charing Cross patients also gave his experiences and talked about the difference digital hearing aids had made to his life, and the service he had received from Charing Cross.

Members of the Group had the chance to ask questions, which mainly focused on waiting times and staffing.

The Group members were given a short tour of the department, which had been refurbished thanks to funding from an Ear, Nose and Throat initiative.
